Everton has announced former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez as their new manager on Wednesday after the former Reds Boss signed a three year contract with The Toffees.
After quitting Chinese club Dalian Professional for family problems during the pandemic, the Spanish coach will take charge of his fourth English top-flight squad – after Liverpool, Chelsea, and Newcastle.
“I am ecstatic to be joining Everton,” he said. Throughout this process, the passion displayed by the club's senior representatives and their willingness to deliver success to this historic club has impressed me greatly,” Benitez added.
“I believe this is a club with a lot of potential. I'm determined to play a significant role in helping this fantastic club accomplish its goals.”
Following the surprise departure this month of Carlo Ancelotti, who joined Real Madrid after 18 months at Goodison Park, Everton resorted to the 61-year-old.
Given Benitez's close ties to Liverpool, who he managed from 2004 to 2010, it will be a contentious appointment. With the "Miracle of Istanbul" in the final against AC Milan in 2005, Benitez led Liverpool to the Champions League title. Liverpool won after trailing 3-0 at halftime.
Benitez, whose family has remained in Merseyside, is a seasoned, well-traveled, and well-liked coach who has previously managed teams such as Real Madrid, Napoli, Inter Milan, and Valencia.
