Arsenal Confirms Matteo Guendouzi Departure

Arsenal have confirmed the departure of French midfielder Matteo Guendouzi to Ligue 1 side Marseille on a season-long loan with an option to buy for €11m at the end of the season.

The Frenchman who has fallen out of favour with manager Mikel Arteta, has been strongly linked with a return to France throughout the transfer window.

On Monday, he appeared to have have announced his departure by issuing a passionate message confirming his departure from the Emirates Stadium, which he quickly deleted from social media.

However, the transfer has now been completed, with Marseille announcing the midfielder's arrival.

Guendouzi is the second player to leave the Emirates Stadium this window, following the departure of David Luiz, who also left after his contract with Arsenal expired.

The French midfielder has signed a one-year loan contract with Marseille, with the club confirming that they have an option to buy him next summer, despite rumours that it was an obligation.

Since joining Arsenal from Lorient in 2018, the 22-year-old has made 82 appearances for the North London club under Unai Emery.

Guendouzi was expected to be a part of Arsenal's development system, but he quickly established himself in the first team, making 48 appearances in all competitions during his first season.

In 2019/20, he appeared in 34 more games, winning the FA Cup with Arsenal against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.

However, under Arteta, he fell out of favor and was loaned out to Bundesliga club Hertha BSC last season.
