Arsenal Sign Benfica Left-back Nuno Tavares

Arsenal have finalized the signing of Benfica's 21-year-old left-back Nuno Tavares on a five-year deal.

Arsenal have issued an official statement confirming that Nuno Tavares has agreed to join them from Benfica. The Gunners have confirmed that the 21-year-old left-back has agreed to a long-term contract with the club, which is thought to be a five-year deal.

Nuno Tavares has been with Benfica since 2015, when he was 15 years old and joined the club's academy. The player's big break into the club's first-team system came in 2019, and he's developed into a promising left-back since then. The 21-year-old had made 41 appearances for the Eagles by the end of the 2020/21 season, contributing one goal and seven assists in the process.

Some of Europe's major clubs had taken notice of his progress at Benfica, and Arsenal had emerged as the most likely candidate to capture Tavares ahead of the summer transfer season.

In exchange for his services, Benfica received €8 million. Following the completion of the transfer, Mikel Arteta expressed his joy at Arsenal's first summer addition, saying, "We welcome Nuno to the team." He is a young player with a lot of potential who has progressed well with Benfica in recent seasons and has also proven his worth by playing for Portugal's Under-21 team.”

“With this energy on the left side of the pitch, Nuno's presence will provide the squad extra strength and alternatives in defense. Nuno's arrival is imminent, and we look forward to welcoming him into the Arsenal family and seeing him play in front of our adoring fans.”
