Manchester United have announced an agreement in principle with Real Madrid for the transfer of French center-back Raphael Varane.
After completing the €85 million signing of Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho last week, the 28-year-old is expected to be the next player to join the club.
Varane, a long-term defensive priority for United, has agreed to move to the Premier League after reaching an agreement with Real Madrid.
“Manchester United is thrilled to announce the club has reached agreement with Real Madrid for the signing of French international defender and World Cup winner Raphael Varane, subject to a medical and player terms being finalized,” the Old Trafford giants stated in a statement.
Due to existing UK coronavirus travel limitations, Varane is unlikely to be able to undergo a physical until next week.
The deal is said to be for €40 million, with add-ons bringing the total to €48 million — a fair bargain for a player who was set to leave the LaLiga club next summer.
Varane was a crucial member of the France team that won the World Cup in 2018 and won four Champions League trophies during his time at the Bernabeu.
Before joining Madrid from Lens in 2011, United had expressed interest in the defender, who had made 360 appearances in all competitions in Spain.
