UEFA Scrap Away Goal Rule Ahead of 2021/2022 Season

As part of a major Champions League and Europa League overhaul, UEFA has abolished the away goals rule.

The regulation has been in existence since 1965, however starting in the 2021-22 season, it will no longer be utilized to determine knockout ties.

The away goals rule will be removed in European tournaments, according to UEFA, and will be implemented in time for the start of the 2021-22 season.

The away goals rule, which has been in place for more than half a century, will no longer be utilized to determine knockout matches in UEFA club tournaments such as the Champions League and Europa League.

The rule currently "runs opposite to its original objective," according to UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, who believes it discourages clubs from playing offensive football.

The regulation change will be implemented in all UEFA club competitions, including men's, women's, and youth tournaments, according to UEFA.

It's unclear whether country-specific competitions would follow suit, and whether the rule change will apply to international competitions as well.

The away goals rule has been used in World Cup qualification matches, as well as the AFC Champions League, Copa Libertadores, and Copa Sudamericana.
