Manchester United In Talks With Real Madrid For Rafael Varane

Manchester United are in talks with Real Madrid for the possible transfer of French defender Rafael Varane.

Varane's transfer is 'progressing slowly,' according to the Manchester Evening News, as United look to add a centre-back this summer.

United opening £50 million bid for the 28-years-old was rejected by Madrid, who are demanding an £80 million fee despite Varane's contract expiring next year.

Earlier reports suggested that Madrid are willing to sell Varane to United in order to secure a fee this year, and United are confident in their ability to bargain down Madrid's asking price.

Varane turned down a lucrative contract offer from Real Madrid, which included the club captaincy, because he believed there was still a gap between his wage and that of Madrid's best-paid players.

United has also held talks with Villarreal defender Pau Torres' representation, although Varane is thought to be their primary target to bolster their defense.

Varane is United's ideal defensive target to compliment club captain Harry Maguire, and the club attempted to sign the Frenchman from Lens in 2011.

Following the 2018 World Cup, United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward stated that he was willing to sanction a £100 million transfer for Varane.
